I feel like the part of my life that you can define as my ‘acting career’ started at a very early age. I was using those skills by either getting into trouble or trying to get out of it. My family was my very first audience. I soon began to make my friends laugh after school, fitting in as the funny kid. Soon after that I was on my way to the big leagues, -school.

My father was called into most of my classes throughout the years to discuss with my teachers about my decisions to make everyone laugh instead of paying more attention. A big compliment came from my eighth grade social studies teacher. During one of those parent visits he said, “Phil likes to make jokes during class, but they’re funny.” My dad came home and told me what he had said. Like me, my father was somewhat surprised.

It was quite the boost to keep the jokes coming.

I later read how Jim Carrey and numerous other stand-up comics use to joke around in class. I once again began to feel good about what I was doing. I was there to learn, so I thought I could learn how to tell better jokes to such a wide audience demographic. Students are the original hecklers and nobody does it better.

There comes a time for everyone that is told that they are funny, where they have to go up on stage and try stand-up comedy. While attending the University of Central Florida, I signed up for a student stand-up comedy contest. I didn’t win, but I did very well. Some of the other comics that night thought so too and began showing me the places to perform in Orlando. While still in the sunshine state, I was even able to perform on a couple of occasions at The Improv. I also hosted at a few bars where I was able to get comics a free meal for performing. For the comics that had never been paid before, the free meal at one point was a big buzz among the fellowship of comics.

I moved out to California with Brett, who I had become friends with during college. We had worked on a few projects together where I very quickly saw the talent that he had for writing and directing. When I heard the show that he had been talking about for some time was going to be shot as a webseries and that he had a part for me, well…I was excited to say the least. For the first time I was going to be in front of the camera making people laugh.
