than-merrillAs the founder and CEO of both FortuneBuilders and CT Homes, Than Merrill has established himself as one of the most successful real estate investors in the country.  His knowledge regarding the real estate industry has helped him become a recognized and well-respected investor, educator and entrepreneur.  Than, in association with his individual business entities, has completed more than 1,000 real estate transactions using a unique, systems dependent business model.  His passion and commitment to this particular field has awarded him the opportunity to reciprocate the success he has achieved.  He founded FortuneBuilders with the sole purpose of conveying his knowledge to prospective students, hoping that they will be able to capitalize on the success they are capable of.

Born and raised in Fresno, California, Than is a proud graduate of Yale University.  While attending Yale, Than started at strong safety for the school’s football team and merited the attention of the National Football League (NFL).  In 2001, upon graduating from Yale, Than was drafted in the seventh round of the NFL Draft by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Having fulfilled a childhood dream of playing in the NFL, he retired and began investing in real estate in New Haven, CT.

In 2004, Than helped found CT Homes, LLC, a residential real estate investment company. The method in which they rehabbed and sold houses was so successful that it caught the attention of the producers of “Flip This House,” a popular reality TV show featured on A&E.  For three seasons, Than and his New Haven team were documented as they provided an insider’s perspective to the world of real estate investing.  This platform caught the attention of a nation al audience, as Than and his team demonstrated how to successfully flip real estate.

His success at CT Homes was due, in large part, to a very efficient and systems dependent real estate business model.  The profitability of his particular approach gained national recognition. Investors of every level sought out his expertise – with the hope that they may emulate his investment strategies, systems, and business model.  In order to fulfill the needs of investors around the nation, Merrill founded FortuneBuilders Inc. in 2006.  FortuneBuilders served as an educational platform in which he could convey his knowledge of the industry to those who want to learn how to successfully invest in real estate. has since grown to become a premier, nationally recognized real estate educational company. has since been ranked number one in education on the Inc. 500 list in 2010 and has maintained a ranking near the top of the list for three consecutive years.

In 2012, Merrill was among those selected to represent the San Diego Business Journal’s Most Admired CEOs.  Merrill’s nomination was directly correlated to his leadership and efforts toward continued innovation throughout FortuneBuilders.  As a finalist, Merrill joined the ranks of San Diego’s top CEOs from every industry.

Than wrote The Real Estate Wholesaling Bible: The Fastest, Easiest Way to Get Started in Real Estate, which was released on April 21, 2014. The book is intended to teach prospective entrepreneurs everything they need to know about wholesaling real estate successfully in today’s market.

Throughout his life, Than has demonstrated an increased willingness to help others.  His passion for philanthropic initiatives helped him and his wife start the Equal Footing foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to educating and promoting health and sports for youth. In addition to the Equal Footing Foundation, Than created  This organization is affiliated with and enlists the help of employees within the company who strive to seek out and support charities, humanitarian efforts and give back to the community.  Than’s most recent philanthropic endeavor culminated in the “FutureFortuneBuilders” initiative.  The purpose behind FFB is to teach financial literacy and personal development to teens, as to prepare them for a better future.  FFB will help children develop successful habits while simultaneously removing society from the perils of a financially illiterate culture.
