More than six years after their award-winning film The Pursuit of Happyness, Will Smith and son Jaden Smith, of Overbrook Entertainment, will be reuniting once again for the sci-fi film After Earth, set to release next summer.
The film follows the saga of General Cypher Raige (Will Smith) and son Kitai (Jaden Smith) on Nova Prime, humanity’s new home one thousand years into the future. After unforeseen circumstances destroy Cypher and Kitai’s craft, and severely impair Cypher, the father and son land on planet Earth—territory that is dangerous and unfamiliar. Kitai must venture out into the treacherous territory in an attempt to recover their rescue beacon and save his dying father. Kitai hopes he can be as strong and courageous as his father.
Filming began in February, 2012 and took place in Costa Rica, California, and Pennsylvania. The film is written by Stephen Gaghan (Traffic) and Gary Whitta, and directed by M. Night Shyamalan (Sixth Sense, Signs).
Will Smith has also been in the news recently for the development of two new TV shows with James Lassiter, of Overbrook Entertainment. “Kingpin” set to air on Cinemax, revolves around a former drug-trafficker who is blackmailed back into his former lifestyle by a CIA agent with even greater plans. “Watchlist,” which was recently sold to Fox, is set in Boston and features a Special Ops member being framed by the CIA for a political assassination. When two former Special Ops teammates come to help, the trio enters into a complex scheming and combating routine to defeat the CIA.
